The question which preoccupies man above all others - the question as to whether there is life after death - has been variously answered throughout the ages. It is, of course, impossible to describe the innumerable variations of those answers; nevertheless, a few main lines of thought are clearly discernible, and their mention may be useful for a better understanding of the Qur'anic treatment of this problem. Some people - probably a minority - seem to be convinced that bodily death amounts to total and irreversible extinction, and that, therefore, all talk about a hereafter but an outcome of wishful thinking. Others are of the opinion that after individual death the human "life-essence" returns to the supposed source of its origin - conceived as the "universal soul" - and merges with it entirely. Some believe in a successive transmigration of the individual soul, at the moment of death, into another body, human or animal, but without a continuation of individual consciousness. Others, again, think that only the soul, and not the entire human "personality", continues to live after death - that is, in a purely spiritual, disembodied form. And, lastly, some believe in an undiminished survival of the individual personality and consciousness, and regard death and resurrection as the twin stages of a positive act of re-creation of the entire human personality, in whatever form this may necessarily involve: and this is the Qur'anic view of the life to come.

وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَائِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّا أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُمْ ۚ مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِي الْكِتَابِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يُحْشَرُونَ
আৰু পৃথিৱীত বিচৰণশীল প্ৰতিটো প্ৰাণী আৰু দুই ডেউকাৰে উৰা প্ৰতিটো চৰাই, তোমালোকৰ দৰেই একো একোটা উম্মত। এই কিতাবত (লাওহে মাহফুজত) আমি একো এৰি দিয়া নাই; তাৰ পিছত সিহঁতক সিহঁতৰ প্ৰতিপালকৰ পিনে একত্ৰিত কৰা হ’ব।

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

তেৱেঁই ৰাতিত তোমালোকৰ মৃত্যু ঘটায় আৰু দিনত তোমালোকে যি উপাৰ্জন কৰা সেয়া তেওঁ জানে। তাৰ পিছত নিৰ্ধাৰিত সময় পূৰ্ণ কৰাৰ কাৰণে দিনত তেওঁ তোমালোকক আকৌ জীৱিত কৰে। তাৰ পিছত তেওঁৰ পিনেই তোমালোকৰ প্ৰত্যাৱৰ্তন। তাৰ পিছত তোমালোকে যি কৰিছিলা সেই বিষয়ে তেওঁ তোমালোকক অৱহিত কৰিব।

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

তেৱেঁই পৃথিৱীৰ সকলো বস্তু তোমালোকৰ বাবেই সৃষ্টি কৰিছে । তাৰ পিছত তেওঁ আকাশৰ পিনে মনোনিবেশ কৰি তাক সাতখন আকাশত বিন্যস্ত কৰিছে; আৰু তেওঁ সকলো বস্তু সম্পৰ্কে সবিশেষ অৱগত।

যিসকলে থিয় হৈ, বহি আৰু শুই আল্লাহক স্মৰণ কৰে আৰু আকাশসমূহ আৰু পৃথিৱীৰ সৃষ্টি সম্পৰ্কে চিন্তা কৰে, আৰু কয়, ‘হে আমাৰ ৰব! তুমি এইবোৰ অনৰ্থক সৃষ্টি কৰা নাই, তুমি অত্যন্ত পৱিত্ৰ, এতেকে তুমি আমাক জুইৰ শাস্তিৰ পৰা ৰক্ষা কৰা’।)

وَفِي الْأَرْضِ قِطَعٌ مُتَجَاوِرَاتٌ وَجَنَّاتٌ مِنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَزَرْعٌ وَنَخِيلٌ صِنْوَانٌ وَغَيْرُ صِنْوَانٍ يُسْقَىٰ بِمَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ وَنُفَضِّلُ بَعْضَهَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فِي الْأُكُلِ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ
আৰু পৃথিৱীত আছে পৰস্পৰ সংলগ্ন ভূখণ্ড, আঙ্গুৰৰ বাগিচা, খেতিপথাৰ, একেই মূলৰ পৰা উদ্গত বা ভিন ভিন মূলৰ পৰা উদ্গত খেজুৰ গছ যিবোৰক একে পানীয়েই জীপাল কৰে, কিন্তু সোৱাদৰ ক্ষেত্ৰত সেইবোৰৰ কিছুমানক আমি আন কিছুমানৰ ওপৰত শ্ৰেষ্ঠত্ব দিওঁ। নিশ্চয় বোধশক্তিসম্পন্ন সম্প্ৰদায়ৰ বাবে ইয়াত আছে নিদৰ্শন।

সেইদিনা শিঙাত ফুঁ দিয়া হ’ব তেতিয়া তোমালোকে দলে দলে আহিবা।

স্মৰণ কৰা, সেই দিনটোক, যিদিনা আমি প্ৰত্যেক সম্প্ৰদায়ক সিহঁতৰ ইমামসহ আহ্বান কৰিম। তাৰ পিছত যিসকলক সিহঁতৰ সোঁহাতত আমলনামা দিয়া হ’ব, সিহঁতে নিজৰ আমলনামা পঢ়িব আৰু সিহঁতৰ ওপৰত অকণো অন্যায় কৰা নহ’ব।

[78:3] that (Ellazii) they (Hum) are disputing (Mukh'talifuun Fiihi)?!
[78:4] Nay (Kallaa)! They will find out (Sa Ya'lamuun).
[78:5] And so (Thumma), nay (Kallaa)! They will find out (Sa Ya'lamuun).
[78:6] Have We not (Alam') made (Naj'åli) the earth (El'Ar'do) a resting place (Mihaadaa)?!
[78:7] And (Wa) the mountains (El'Jibaala) as stakes (Aw'taadaa)?!
[78:8] And (Wa) We created you (p) (Khalaq'naa-kum) in pairs (Az'waajaa)?!
[78:9] And (Wa) We made (Jaål'naa) your sleep (Naw'ma-kum) a slumber (Subaataa)?!
[78:10] And (Wa) We made (Jaål'naa) the night (Ellai'la) a covering (Libaasaa)?!
[78:11] And (Wa) We made (Jaål'naa) the daytime (En'Nahaara)
for livelihood (Maååshaa)?!

[78:16] as well as (Wa) undergrowth (Al'faafaa) gardens (Jannaatin)?!
[78:17] Indeed (Inna), the Day of Decisiveness (44:40) (Yaw'mal' Fas'li) is (Kaana) an appointed time (Miiqaatan).
